Take an early direct train from Vienna to maximize your time in Salzburg.
Walk through Mirabell Gardens and cross the river into the Old Town.

Return to Salzburg station for the direct train back to Vienna.
Frequent direct Railjet and Westbahn services connect Vienna and Salzburg in around 2.5 hours. This is a longer journey but practical in one day if you depart early and reserve suitable return travel.
