Why visit
Provins was one of the great fair towns of medieval Champagne and still looks the part, with intact ramparts, underground galleries and a hilltop upper town of stone houses. Historical shows and rose gardens make it an especially good day out in summer.

Return to Paris on an early evening train.
Trains from Paris Gare de l'Est reach Provins in about 1 hour 20 minutes. The station is in the lower town, and the walled upper town is a 15–20 minute uphill walk or a short local bus ride away.
A full day (7–8 hours), or a long half day if you skip the shows.
