Day trip from London
York
Medieval England at its most atmospheric
Approximately 2 hours by train
Why visit
York is the finest walled city in England — two thousand years of Roman, Viking and medieval history layered inside three miles of intact city walls. The Shambles, with its overhanging timber-framed houses, is the best-preserved medieval street in Europe, York Minster is one of the greatest cathedrals in the world, and the whole compact centre is a joy to explore on foot.
Top things to see
- York Minster — one of the world's great Gothic cathedrals, with the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in Britain
- The Shambles — the famous crooked medieval street of timber-framed shops
- York City Walls — walk the most complete medieval walls in England, with views over the rooftops
- Jorvik Viking Centre — ride through the reconstructed Viking city of Jorvik
- Clifford's Tower — the Norman keep with panoramic city views
- National Railway Museum — the world's greatest railway collection, free to enter
Suggested one-day plan
Take an early LNER train from London King's Cross and arrive mid-morning. Walk from the station to York Minster — tour the cathedral and, if you're feeling energetic, climb the central tower's 275 steps.
Lunch in a historic pub such as the House of the Trembling Madness, then explore The Shambles and the surrounding medieval lanes of the old town.
Walk a section of the city walls between Bootham Bar and Micklegate Bar, then choose between the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum or Clifford's Tower.
Join an early-evening ghost walk — York claims to be Europe's most haunted city — then dinner before the train back to London.
Fast LNER trains run from London King's Cross to York in around 2 hours. The station is a 10-minute walk from the city walls and Minster — look out for the National Railway Museum right beside it.
A long, full day (9–10 hours) — the two-hour journey each way is worth it, but an early start makes all the difference.
- Book LNER advance fares for the best prices — walk-up fares on this route are expensive, but advance singles can be very reasonable.
- The Minster tower climb involves 275 narrow spiral steps and runs in timed slots — book on arrival or online.
- The Jorvik Viking Centre regularly sells out at weekends; pre-booking a timed slot is strongly advised.
- York is compact and entirely walkable, but the cobbles are unforgiving — wear comfortable shoes.
