Suggested one-day plan
Take an early train to Sintra, then use a local bus, taxi or pre-arranged transfer to reach a timed Pena Palace visit.
Return toward the historic centre for lunch and a short walk through the old streets.
Explore Quinta da Regaleira and its gardens, allowing time for the walk or local transfer.
Return to Sintra station and take the train back to Lisbon.
Direct suburban trains run from Lisbon’s Rossio station to Sintra town in around 40–50 minutes. The railway station is not beside Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle or Quinta da Regaleira. Continue by local bus, taxi, tuk-tuk or a substantial uphill walk, and allow time for traffic and queues.
A full day (8–10 hours), focused on two major attractions rather than trying to see everything.
- Popular attractions can become extremely busy; advance timed tickets are advisable.
- Pena Palace access involves a separate uphill transfer from Sintra town.
- Road traffic can delay buses and taxis in peak periods.
- Wear supportive shoes for steep lanes, steps and garden paths.
