About

Why visit Dublin Castle Tour

Built on the orders of King John in 1204 as the fortified seat of English rule in Ireland, Dublin Castle stood as the centre of British power for over 700 years until it was formally handed over to Michael Collins in 1922. Today it hosts Irish presidential inaugurations and state visits, and guided tours take you through the opulent State Apartments and the excavated medieval undercroft.

Did you know
  • The 'Dubh Linn' (Black Pool) that gave Dublin its name lay where the castle garden is now.
  • The castle's Bermingham Tower held political prisoners including Red Hugh O'Donnell, who famously escaped in 1591.
  • The Irish Crown Jewels were stolen from the castle in 1907 and have never been recovered.
