Kastellet is one of Northern Europe's best-preserved star fortresses and is still a working military area, with public paths along its grassy ramparts. Just outside, on the Langelinie waterfront, sits Edvard Eriksen's small bronze Little Mermaid (1913), inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's tale.
