Leave Barcelona early, connect to the mountain railway or cable car, and visit the basilica before the busiest period.
Explore the monastery complex and pause for lunch with mountain views.
Take the Sant Joan funicular and follow a scenic walking trail suited to the weather and your ability.
Descend to the valley station and return to Barcelona.
Take an FGC train from Plaça d’Espanya to either Monistrol de Montserrat for the Cremallera rack railway or Aeri de Montserrat for the cable car. The Barcelona train does not go directly to the monastery: both routes require a separate mountain connection, so check coordinated schedules before leaving.
A full day (7–9 hours), especially if you plan to walk beyond the monastery.
