Day trip from Amsterdam
Zaanse Schans
Windmills & Dutch Traditions
Approximately 20–30 minutes
Why visit
Zaanse Schans gathers working windmills, green timber houses and traditional workshops along the river Zaan, giving you the postcard Dutch landscape within half an hour of Amsterdam. The mills still grind pigment, spices and oil, so this is a living site rather than a static museum.
Top things to see
- The riverside row of working windmills, several open to climb
- The cheese farm and its tasting counter
- The wooden clog workshop and demonstrations
- The Zaans Museum and Verkade pavilion
- The pepper-house cottages and the footbridge views over the Zaan
Suggested one-day plan
Travel out early and walk the riverside path while the mills are quiet, going inside one or two.
Visit the cheese farm and clog workshop, then have lunch at one of the village cafés.
Explore the Zaans Museum, then browse the historic houses and craft shops.
Return to Amsterdam in the late afternoon, in good time for dinner in the city.
Trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans take around 17 minutes, followed by a signposted walk of roughly 15 minutes including the bridge over the Zaan. Bus 391 from Amsterdam Centraal runs directly to the site in about 40 minutes if you prefer to avoid the walk. Either way, plan for a short onward leg after the train — the mills are not beside the platform.
Around 4–5 hours door to door, with 3 hours on site.
- Entry to the village is free; individual mills, the cheese farm and the museum charge separately.
- Mornings are far quieter than midday, when coach groups arrive.
- The riverside paths are exposed and often windy — bring a layer.
- Some mills close in bad weather or out of season, so check on arrival.
