Rebuilt after 1940, Rotterdam is the one Dutch city with no historic skyline to protect — and it shows. Cube houses, the vaulted Markthal and the sweeping Erasmus Bridge make it Europe's most adventurous architectural playground, backed by a genuinely good food scene.

Suggested one-day plan
Travel out and start at the Cube Houses and Markthal near Blaak station.
Graze through the Markthal for lunch, then walk to the Erasmus Bridge.
Cross to Kop van Zuid, or visit the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen and Museumpark.
Return to Amsterdam, or stay for dinner in the Witte de Withstraat district.
Intercity trains from Amsterdam Centraal take around 65 minutes; the high-speed Intercity Direct covers it in about 40–45 minutes. Blaak station, beside the Cube Houses and Markthal, is two stops on from Rotterdam Centraal by metro.
A full day (7–8 hours) to cover the centre and the waterfront.
- Intercity Direct trains carry a small supplement on top of the standard fare.
- The water taxi across the Maas is a quick, scenic alternative to walking the bridge.
- The Markthal is busiest at weekend lunchtimes.
- Rotterdam combines well with Delft, which lies on the same rail line.
