Day trip from Amsterdam
Keukenhof
A Spectacular Spring Escape
Approximately 45–60 minutes with onward bus/transfer
Why visit
Keukenhof plants around seven million bulbs each year across 32 hectares of parkland, creating a display of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths that has no real equal anywhere. It is the single best way to see the Dutch bulb season at its peak.
Top things to see
- The tulip beds and themed garden walks
- The indoor flower pavilions and changing shows
- The historic windmill and its view over the surrounding bulb fields
- The inspirational show gardens
- Whisper boat trips through the bulb fields behind the park
Suggested one-day plan
Travel out early — arriving at opening time gives you the gardens at their quietest.
Walk the main garden routes and pavilions, breaking for lunch inside the park.
Climb the windmill for the bulb-field view and take a whisper boat trip if running.
Take the bus back to the train and return to Amsterdam.
There is no station at Keukenhof, so an onward transfer is always required. The usual route is a train from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol or Leiden Centraal, then the dedicated Keukenhof Express bus (858 from Schiphol, 854 from Leiden), each around 30 minutes. Combination tickets covering bus and entry are sold in advance and skip the ticket queue. Direct coaches also run from central Amsterdam.
Around 6–7 hours door to door, with 3–4 hours in the gardens.
- Keukenhof is strictly seasonal: it opens only for the spring tulip season, generally from around late March to mid-May, and is closed for the rest of the year. Always check the current year's opening dates before planning your trip.
- Peak bloom shifts with the weather each year — mid-April is usually the safest bet, but no date is guaranteed.
- Book a timed entry and bus combination ticket in advance; the park sells out on spring weekends.
- Go on a weekday and arrive at opening for the calmest experience.
- The park is large and mostly outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and bring rain protection.
