Haarlem offers the canals, gables and café terraces of Amsterdam at a gentler pace, and it is barely fifteen minutes away. The Grote Markt is one of the finest squares in the Netherlands, and the city's museums punch well above its size.

Suggested one-day plan
Take the short train out and start on the Grote Markt, visiting the Grote Kerk.
Lunch on a terrace by the square, then wander the shopping lanes of the Gouden Straatjes.
Visit the Frans Hals Museum or Teylers Museum, then follow the Spaarne riverside.
Return to Amsterdam, or stay for an early dinner in the centre.
Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal run several times an hour and take 15–20 minutes. Haarlem station is a flat 10-minute walk from the Grote Markt, so no onward transport is needed.
Half a day (4–5 hours) is comfortable; a full day if you add both museums.
- Saturday brings a large market to the Grote Markt, lively but busy.
- The hofjes are private homes — visit quietly and respect posted hours.
- Many museums close on Mondays.
- Haarlem also works well as a stop en route to the coast at Zandvoort.
